As General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT), you will drive strategic direction, promoting destination marketing and management. You'll spearhead strategic initiatives to attract domestic and international visitors, foster sustainable tourism growth, and enhance stakeholder relationships.

Our Mahi
Destination Great Lake Taupō is the tourism organisation responsible for promoting and developing the Taupō Region as a premier visitor destination. Through the Love Taupō brand, DGLT aims to attract visitors, enhance the tourism experience, and support sustainable growth by showcasing the natural beauty, cultural richness, and diverse recreational opportunities of the region.

The role
As the General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupō, your core responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Management: Collaborate with stakeholders to set and implement strategic direction for the organization, supporting both local and New Zealand tourism.
  • Destination Marketing: Develop and execute marketing strategies to increase visitor spend and market share, enhancing the region's brand profile.
  • Destination Management: Collaborate on the Destination Management Plan, support new product development, and improve local tourism sector capability.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with stakeholders, gain social license for tourism, and represent DGLT across various platforms.
  • Business Management: Oversee day-to-day operations, manage budgets, and deliver accurate reporting to meet governance and stakeholder expectations.
  • Team Leadership: Foster a high-performance team environment and provide personal development opportunities for staff.
  • Advocacy: Lead advocacy efforts for the tourism industry, participating in government consultations and public speaking engagements.
  • Board Support: Collaborate with the Board Chairperson, providing recommendations and information to aid decision-making.
  • Corporate Contribution: Support organizational development initiatives and ensure compliance with governance and corporate plans.

Your strengths
You should possess strong leadership skills to motivate teams and drive strategic vision. Effective communication abilities are crucial for building partnerships and engaging with diverse stakeholders. Strategic planning and financial acumen are necessary to develop innovative marketing strategies and oversee budgets effectively.

Your qualifications and experience: to excel in this role, you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification with a focus on management, marketing, or tourism.
  • Proven experience (5+ years) in strategic leadership and management.
  • Strong understanding of the tourism industry and destination marketing.
  • Sound financial acumen and business management expertise.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Understanding of Local Government systems and processes - political awareness.
  • Excellent communicator, facilitator and presenter.
  • Sound knowledge of destination and/or tourism marketing principles and tools, especially with digital and web marketing platforms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
