The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) acts in the world to build a safer, more prosperous, and more sustainable future for New Zealanders. The NZ Inc Operations Unit has a broad stakeholder network with multiple touch points across NZ Inc agencies and Ministry business units onshore and offshore.

The purpose of this role is to lead and contribute to operational and strategic initiatives that support the offshore network. This position will work closely with other members of the NZ Inc Operations Unit, NZ Inc agency partners and relevant MFAT business units.

This is not a Foreign Policy/diplomatic role. This is a ‘Corporate’ role (known here as a specialist role) based in central Wellington, NZ.

In this role you will:
  • Lead engagement and communications between the Ministry and agencies across a portfolio of work
  • Contribute to operational and strategic initiatives that promote the principals and objectives of the NZ Inc’s framework for International Operations
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Identify and manage issues and risks, escalating as necessary
  • Provide timely and quality advise to senior managers, including preparation of briefing materials
  • Collaborate with the units Coordinator, Agency services, Advisors and identify areas to share knowledge

This position is responsible for tools and strategies that guide how the operations unit manages relationships and ensures effective engagement across its broad stakeholder network. If you have a good understanding of offshore post operations and/or the New Zealand government diplomatic network this would be an advantage.

The successful person will offer:
  • Experience working in complex organisations and on cross agency projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Proven ability to think strategically, develop frameworks and take a cross system approach
  • Excellent political awareness and sensitivity to anticipate areas of potential risk and inform decision making
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and management skills
  • Excellent communication skills with a flair for written communication
  • A strong understanding of the machinery of Government
  • A sound understanding of tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principals.
