Who are we – Ko wai mātou

Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao is a Crown Entity with a dedicated focus on international education. It brings the New Zealand Government's goals for international education to life, providing benefits to New Zealanders and international learners.

Education New Zealand promotes New Zealand as a study destination, and works with partners in New Zealand and offshore to achieve the goal of more than doubling the export value of international education by 2027.  

The nature of the position – Te āhua o te tūrunga

For the first time since its establishment in 2011, Education New Zealand is seeking a new Chief Executive to build strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, to lead and drive a focus on impact, and to inspire and nurture a united team to lead the work in New Zealand and offshore.

Essential skills/experiences for the role – Ngā tino pūkenga/wheako

The Chief Executive will have proven experience in:

  • leading united and high-performing senior teams
  • transforming organisations in times of change
  • working within the public sector context

The Chief Executive will share a vision of world-leading international education and experiences, through marketing and promotional activities, and through partnerships with other agencies. They will drive the strategic direction of the organisation and provide strategic advice to the Board, NZ Inc agencies and relevant Ministers.

The Chief Executive will have extensive senior leadership experience, be an exceptional people leader, a decisive decision-maker and an excellent communicator. They will be able to identify and resolve competing priorities and pressures in a way that is constructive, sustainable and consistent with Government policy.

An appreciation of the principles and opportunities relating to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and advocacy for diversity and multi-culturalism, will also be important. Background experience will include working with or in central government and/or the education sector, as well as a commercial focus and experience in global promotion and marketing.
