Te tūnga | The role

The STRmix team (www.strmix.com) creates world leading, award winning software that allows forensic biologists to analyse, interpret and investigate DNA profiles more efficiently and effectively.'Our mission is to empower the forensic community through science and innovation. We do this through leading edge scientific research, high quality software development and comprehensive training and support delivery.'Our flagship software, STRmix', has been developed by ESR in partnership with Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA). Adding FaSTR' DNA and DBLR' to STRmix', we provide an end-to-end analysis and interpretation solution.

We have a permanent fulltime (minimum of 37.5 - 40 hours per week) opportunity for a Data Analyst to join the STRmix team. This role is specific to the STRmix' software application and related software and will focus on supporting the STRmix team through the analysis of DNA profiling data during forensic DNA laboratory's internal validation and implementation process. You will work closely in the STRmix team to analyse data and generate reports in a timely fashion for forensic science customers worldwide.

In this role, you will be involved in the following:

  • Assist with the preparation of customer reports defining parameters and describing internal validation studies for STRmix' and related software.
  • Assist with data analysis for STRmix' and related software.
  • Where required, assist with the creation and review of customer training resources.
  • Where required, undertake supervised software build testing to assist with the developmental validation of software products.
  • Analyse raw data from customer laboratories using CE data analysis software e.g., GeneMapper ID-X, GeneMarker, FaSTR' DNA.
  • Prepare STRmix' evidence and reference input files, as well as kit, stutter, and database files for STRmix' and related software.
  • Undertake linear regression analysis on stutter ratio data to inform stutter models.
  • Run Model Maker within STRmix' to determine peak modelling parameters.
  • Assist with internal validation studies undertaken using customer DNA profiles analysed in STRmix' and related software, including performing sensitivity and specificity testing.
  • Assist with other data analysis as required (for external customer laboratories, ESR and project and development work) using data analysis tools e.g., MS Excel, R.

This role will be based at our Mount Albert Science Centre in Auckland.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An appropriate postgraduate qualification or a BSc with postgraduate experience in Forensic Science, Biology, Genetics, Statistics or similar.
  • Previous experience in forensic science is preferred.
  • Excellent data analysis and MS Excel skills.
  • Experience in statistical modelling or population genetic modelling would be highly desirable.
  • Good knowledge of STRmix' and strong data manipulation skills are also desirable.
  • The ability to liaise and focus on external customers and their requirements.
  • Experience delivering to deadlines with conflicting priorities.
  • Flexibility to work with overseas customers as required.

The indicative salary range is from $NZ85,040 - $NZ101,129, with additional benefits and international relocation assistance as applicable.
