We're looking for an Economist who has prior work experience to join our Consumer Economics team in either our Wellington or Auckland office.   This opportunity would especially suit an early-career microeconomist or recent graduate with skills in microeconomics or behavioural economics.  This is an area of expansion for the FMA, which means this is a unique opportunity to influence how we build economic research and analysis into our regulatory approach.

At the FMA, the work you do counts. We lead better, fairer outcomes for investors, consumers, and New Zealanders.  Our innovative people drive the evolution of the financial industry, influencing the market and effecting positive change. Our remit is expanding and evolving, which means we need new talent to join our newly created Economics & Research team.

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

As an economist at FMA you'll play a key role in the continued development of our economic research and analytical capability to support our understanding of the drivers of market, provider, and consumer behaviour.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering economic analysis and research on important financial conduct topics that support the FMA to better understand the drivers of market, provider, and consumer behaviour.
  • Analysing diverse information sources and methodologies including empirical data, academic findings, and other secondary sources.
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders who will use economic analysis and research findings to inform new policy development, frontline supervision, misconduct investigations, and strategy setting.

You will join a genuinely supportive and influential team with a diverse set of skills, carry out interesting and impactful work, engage right across the FMA including with senior leadership, and have the opportunity to directly influence how the FMA responds to emerging trends in financial markets.

He kōrero mōu: About you

The FMA is growing its economics and research capabilities so being a curious, analytical thinker who loves to learn will be essential to success. This will be a technical role so strong analytics and research experience is essential combined with:

  • Experience with economic analysis and research in a previous role.
  • A sound knowledge of economic principles.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in economics.

What's special about our team?

The work we're involved in is as challenging as it is interesting. What's more, you'll be joining a supportive team culture working with people who love what they do. We offer a comprehensive induction programme and ongoing opportunities for professional development and continuous learning.

We pride ourselves on achieving a great work-life balance - it's not just a thing we say we do! We offer flexible working arrangements to support you in your life outside of work and have created a range of wellness and social activities for our people to connect and socialise.
