Emergency Medicine Specialist or Rural Hospital Specialist

Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury (Based at Timaru Hospital, South Island, New Zealand)

Permanent Role up to 1 FTE

Some flexibility of engagement can be considered, such as a Part-time commitment.  Please talk to us about your preference.

Right now, we have a vacancy for a Senior Medical Officer to join the Emergency Department at Timaru Hospital. Located in the South Island of New Zealand the district of South Canterbury is centrally located and an easy to place to live and work.

Emergency Specialist Role

The department consists of 14 Spaces (Beds and Fastrack spaces), with 22,000 presentations covering a wide range of emergencies, including trauma, with backup from inpatient teams including anaesthesia, paediatrics, mental health, O&G, surgical and internal medicine specialists.  The role is varied with staff enabled to triage and diagnose a variety of conditions.

The ED team is a tight-knit group, consisting of Senior Medical Officers and a core of experienced and multi-skilled ED nurses.   The roster consists of 3 overlapping 9-hour shifts, (plus House Officer and Registrar assistance). Considerable efforts are made to accommodate individual preferences while rostering.

A major advantage here is the roster has no night shift and no afterhours 'on-call' requirement and typically operates on a 6-week cycle, thereby allowing some degree of predictability for planning one - s personal commitments & interests.

Successful applicants will be offered a position based on the DHB/ASMS MECA terms and conditions, including a generous CME allowance.  South Canterbury has strong links with the University of Otago School of Medicine with opportunities for Senior Medical Officer to become involved as Clinical Supervisors.

Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury is responsible for the delivery of services throughout the South Canterbury region and Timaru Hospital (131 beds) serves a district population of approximately 50,000 based in a General Hospital Facility, (which has just commenced a significant refurbishment programme), providing our local community with such critical 24/7 services as  ED, ICU/CCU, General, Orthopaedic, & ENT Surgery, O&G, Psychiatry, Geriatrics, Oncology & Palliative Care, Internal Medicine and Paediatrics.
