Establishment Chief Executive, Charter School Agency at Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission, Wellington - Wairarapa

The Charter School Agency (the Agency) will be created as a standalone departmental agency on 1 July 2024 to establish, implement, operate and monitor the performance of charter schools kura hourua in New Zealand. It will be hosted by the Ministry of Education, which will support the Agency in the delivery of its functions.

Charter Schools will provide parents and communities with more flexibility and choices on how their children are educated. The Charter School model will have greater control over staffing, teaching, governance, operation, property management and funding. A small number of charter schools are expected to be operational by the beginning of 2025, with the support of the Establishment Board to guide the formation of the charter school model and ongoing functions and management of the model.

We are looking for an Establishment Chief Executive, to establish and lead the Agency in delivery the Government's priorities. They will have an understanding of the education system and procurement, with an understanding of what well operated systems look like to manage contracts on a day-to-day basis.

The Establishment Chief Executive will build relationships across the broad range of stakeholders in the education system, and provide advice to Ministers, collaborating and influencing at a senior level. As a leader establishing the Agency, they will be able to develop a strong team and shape the Agency to position it for strategic impact.

They will be appointed under schedule 7 clause 9 of the Public Service Act 2020, for a term of up to 18months.
