Ngā mōhiohio e pā ana ki tēnei mahi (About this position)

This role sits within the Health NZ National Public Health Service (NPHS) team in Nelson Marlborough but works as part of our regional NPHS Te Waipounamu team.

This is an exciting career where you will find yourself being part of our large regional Protection Team and involved in regulatory work, monitoring, communicable disease investigation, border Biosecurity, and emergency preparedness.  Your ability to create positive working relationships at all levels with external agencies and the public is essential.

 Critical to the role will be your ability to manage process, risk assessment and priority setting, deliver on tight timeframes, be flexible with work activities and demonstrate a high level of accuracy. Your initiative and outstanding interpersonal skills will make you a great team player.

 We are seeking a motivated person who is either currently qualified as a Health Protection Officer or is currently training and studying to become a Health Protection Officer. There is a requirement to be part of an on-call after hours roster.

It goes without saying that you will be a strategic thinker and an exceptional planner with outstanding organisational skills. A good knowledge of and strong links to the wider local communities will be an advantage.

In order to be successful in this role, you will also need to demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • A clean, full class one, NZ Driver - s License
  • Ability to cope with work pressures and stress, whist proactively managing conflicting demands on time.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying relevant legislation, codes, standards, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the implications for public health including the determinants of health

You preferably will have previously been designated as a Health Protection Officer by the Ministry of Health and have retained the competencies such that designation could be reinstated on appointment. Applicants with an appropriate undergraduate qualification or a partly completed postgraduate diploma in environmental health science may be considered for appointment as a trainee.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in New Zealand or hold a valid NZ visa at the time of applying.
