Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care is looking to recruit a Provisional Fellow that will provide you the opportunity to;

  • Get exposure to the range of practice of a consultant anaesthetist in a rural hospital
  • Contribute to the department of anaesthesia and critical care quality assurance activities with specific focus on the challenges unique to rural and regional hospitals.

The roster will consist of 6 clinical sessions covering a range of specialties, as well as preassessment clinic, duty anaesthetist sessions and acute pain rounds. The fellow will undertake two non-clinical sessions per week within which they are expected to spend time continuing their professional development and providing education for junior members of the department.

After a period of orientation and supervision it is also expected that the fellow will participate in oncall with consultant back up.

Teaching and support of junior trainees is an important part of the job so the Fellow will supervise registrars.

We run weekly teaching sessions that are based on preparing the registrars for the part one exam. The fellow can contribute to some of these sessions. They can also be involved in teaching theatre staff during monthly education sessions.

The fellowship will help prepare the candidate for independent practice so they will be assigned to some lists by themselves. During these cases they will receive support from the duty anaesthetist.
