Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, leads the day-to-day running of our health system across New Zealand, with functions delivered at local, district, regional and national levels. It weaves the functions of the 20 former District Health Boards into its regional divisions and district offices, ensuring continuity of services in the health system.

Here in Waitaha, Canterbury we deliver health services to the almost 700,000 people that live in the Canterbury region. We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles by ensuring our partnership with Māori are at the forefront of all our conversations.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

We are currently seeking a Senior Advanced Medical Trainee (preferably in their last year of advanced training) for a 12-month Part Time (0.5 FTE) Fixed Term to join our team starting January 2025 to January 2026. This role would suit Advanced Trainees in Nephrology primarily, but other medical specialties will be considered.

The role has previously been approved as part time (6 months equivalent) training as part of General Medicine or Nephrology training.

Clinical duties are those of the Nephrology Advanced Trainee/Registrar, covering Outpatient Clinics and Inpatient Care, including remote clinics (with supervision of a SMO). You will be working with the two Nephrology Registrars to provide continuity of RMO level cover for the service (for example, to cover for leave and rostered days off for the Registrars).

The role is suitable for combination with research, other work or training, or part time training.

There is flexibility in the precise days of clinical work, with ability to vary the days of clinical and research work to meet the needs of the department, the research program, and the Trainee.

Funding for research is not included in the role, but the department will support the applicant to seek funding from external bodies for suitable projects.

The Department of Nephrology at Christchurch Hospital provides a regional Nephrology Service for people in Canterbury, South Canterbury, and Westland. We provide General nephrology Outpatient Services, Inpatient consultations and hospital haemodialysis. We have a Home Dialysis Training Unit teaching home Haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis for patients in our region. We are also the transplant centre for the lower South Island.
