Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

The Population Health Gain business unit was established to provide trusted pragmatic advice to health system decision makers with an evidence based, intelligence driven and whole of system approach to improve population level outcomes.

In this role, your primary purpose will be to provide strategic support, advice and leadership to Population Health Gain and Service Improvement and Innovation Directorate on embedding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its commitments including equity and pursuing Māori health gain across population health functions to enhance population wellbeing and health outcomes equitably.

On a day-to-day basis, you will be responsible for developing and providing technical advice at a principal level to a wide range of audiences including leaders within the wider Population Health Gain unit. You will utilise evidence, intelligence, and insights to inform your decisions and support any resulting recommendations.

Your high level of subject matter expertise in Population Health will be essential as you will be required to lead projects of work and support the planning, design and implementation of work plans and priorities. You will also act as a mentor within your team and will provide coaching and training to your fellow team members.

You will be dedicated to developing strategies and approaches that reflect the most recent advice and research to achieve Pae ora, particularly equity for Māori.

You will have a track record of supporting iwi, hapū and Māori community aspirations and working in a collaborative way with other team colleagues to support Te Pae Tata actions.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

Ka kawea e koe | You will bring:

  • Demonstrated the integration of mātauranga Māori into public health practice
  • Five years or more relevant experience in the health system.
  • Five years or more experience in an advisory role, applying critical thinking and using sound judgement to develop options and provide advice
  • An understanding of and experience in population health, quality improvement and innovative use of evidence with the ability to select, adapt and use a range of relevant frameworks, principles, tools and methods, drawing on experience in different areas of expertise to apply them appropriately to key priorities
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • A relevant health or related tertiary undergraduate and post-graduate qualification
  • A commitment to being a good Te Tiriti partner in all your actions. This includes an understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the ability to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in this role  
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
