Mō te tūranga | About the role

This role will contribute to ensuring that we as a district operations team maintain healthy positive working relationships with local iwi and meet our Treaty settlement obligations. The role will involve clarifying our obligations and identifying gaps in our delivery, then working with the affected iwi and the DOC operations team to raise our collective understanding and capability.

You will work closely with Ngāti Rangitihi environmental leads to support their conservation aspirations and ensure DOC fulfils its obligations under the Ngāti Rangitihi treaty settlement act. You'll play a key role in various tasks, including:

  • planning and coordinating joint conservation projects
  • drafting management plans and agreements
  • organising cultural workshops (wānanga)
  • participating in occasional field work
  • fostering cultural awareness among our staff
  • integrating a Te Ao Māori perspective into our operations
  • prioritising the long-term aspirations of whānau, hapū, and Iwi in our Biodiversity, Recreation, and Community programs.

 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Able to engage and support aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi and give effect to Treaty principles.
  • Ability to navigate and balance differing perspectives and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Identifying gaps in Treaty settlement implementation obligations across the District and work with the Operations team to plan for, and remedy the gaps.
  • Scope work arising from new Treaty settlements, and work with the management team to operationalize conservation and commercial opportunities for iwi.
  • Coordinate legal input to interpret settlement documents and ensure the implementation plan fulfils the intent of the settlement.
  • Support coordination of regular meetings with whānau, hapū and iwi to develop, review and amend implementation of relevant agreements, plans, and frameworks.
  • Support opportunities for whānau, hapū and iwi to build their internal capabilities to practice their responsibilities as kaitiaki.
  • Current full New Zealand driver licence.

The Rotorua district operations team is a small but passionate group of environmental and conservation enthusiasts. Our team consists of Biodiversity, Recreation and Treaty and Community functions. The salary range for this position is $66,535 to $83,906 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
