Mō te tūnga | About the role

The Section Leader oversees the provision of high quality and effective security and protective services during rostered shifts.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing day-to-day operational oversight and support of teams' tasks and duties, including providing support and training with the operation of the technical security equipment. Ensuring records, logbooks and databases are up to date.
  • Providing guidance and frontline leadership to guards on shift.
  • Ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Leading shift handover protocols to provide a secure environment for staff, visitors and others 24/7. 
  • Providing support and respond to incidents and health and safety matters during rostered shift as required.
  • Activating on-call/call-back protocols to ensure adequate staffing levels during the shift as required.
  • Maintaining an awareness of the building environment and the people working in and/or visiting the building/site.
  • Undertaking six monthly and annual performance development reviews, assessing the performance of each allocated team member.

The salary range for this role is $82,861.14 - $96,672.38 including 4% KiwiSaver contribution and salary loading (roster) allowance payment. The role operates on a four days on, four days off roster consisting of both day and night shifts.

Full time hours are guaranteed. Familiarity or prior experience working shifts will be highly advantageous.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience

Ideally, you will bring 5-7 years prior experience in a security environment and have experience in a Leadership capacity. You may also be an experienced security guard looking for the next step in your career. As part of your experience, you will be equipped with a strong knowledge of security systems and technology, and have confidence with verbal and written skills.

Along with your ability to build, foster and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, you work well under pressure and maintain security standards, which will be a crucial element to your success in the role.

Additional skills and qualifications:

  • Ability to display initiative and good judgement.
  • Highly effective communication skills with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to write clear, concise incident reports and to interpret and apply standard operating procedures.
  • A Class 1 NZ Driver Licence is required.

Highly desired:

  • Prior shift leadership duties.
  • Knowledge of the New Zealand Defence Force and the Protective Security Requirements (PSR).
  • Sound understanding of the provision of operational and protection function, preferably in the New Zealand Public/State Sector context.
  • A current (and maintained) First Aid Certificate.
  • A National Certificate in Security and/or similar experience.

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
