A rare opportunity for a Senior Customs Officer (SCO) Grade 2 has arisen within our Customs Technical Unit based in our Intelligence, Investigations & Enforcement Group in Auckland.

 

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi  About the role…

 

As an SCO G2 you will conceive, design, develop and deliver technical capabilities to support border-related investigations. The key focus of this role is to provide specialised technical and operational support often in unique and challenging environments.

The Customs Technical Unit require someone with a high level of operational ability, who is solutions focused, with specific technical skills and industry experience in one or more of the following areas;

  • CCTV
  • Telecommunications
  • Electronics
  • Radio & RF Systems

Additional desirable skills:

  • Workshop Skills: Wood, Metal, Fitting & Turning
  • Electrical
  • CAD design & Additive manufacturing
  • Programming skills
  • IP Networking

Previous experience in covert law enforcement and/or operational environments is beneficial. This role requires a resilient, flexible, dynamic, conscientious and adaptable individual.  You'll have outstanding interpersonal skills whilst being highly motivated, able to work autonomously and have a real drive for results.

To succeed in this role, you'll need to be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven experience in problem-solving and decision-making in a fast-paced operational environment, including the ability to adopt a flexible and proactive approach to achieve outcomes
  • Experience in an operational role within a government, enforcement or relevant commercial environment
  • High-level technical skills across a range of disciplines
  • Excellent communication skills including ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing - you will need to be able to present technical and operational content in a clear concise and confident manner
  • Self-motivation, innovation and initiative
  • Strong work ethic contributing to a positive team culture
  • High level of commitment to quality and service

 

As part of working for Customs you will also need to have:

  • A valid full/unrestricted New Zealand driver's licence
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance
  • Sufficient physical fitness to meet and maintain all physical requirements* for the role

 

(*) Physical fitness - as part of the selection process if shortlisted for interview, you will need to pass a pre-employment medical test, a drug screen and a Physical Fitness Test which includes a Beep Test to 'average' level as well as some lifting and agility tasks.

 

This position is full-time, and you need to have the ability to work flexibly including weekends and outside of business hours' work. Please note that this position requires travel, sometimes at short notice.

 

The salary range for this role is $91,602 - $116,023 depending on experience and on top that you will receive an allowance $15,640 per annum for working unpredictable hours.

Joining Te Mana Ārai

 

To achieve a Top-Secret clearance, you must be New Zealand Citizen or a New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application;

OR a New Zealand Citizen or a New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand. Already having Top Secret clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.

You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.

Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record.
