Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
As the Senior Legal Counsel - Governance & Funding, you will provide specialised legal advice and support in Board governance, financing, and funding within the transport sector. This includes fostering relationships within the legal team, across NZTA - Waka Kotahi, and with key government bodies to promote best practices.

Responsibilities include offering expert legal counsel on governance matters, optimizing efficiency in governance support delivery, and fostering collaboration within the legal team. Additionally, active engagement with stakeholders to grasp strategic nuances and promote proactive legal strategies is essential.

Moreover, this role involves nurturing a collaborative environment conducive to the legal team's success, aligning with strategic objectives, and mitigating legal risks. Contributions will extend to shaping the Governance, Risk and Legal team's strategic direction and overseeing its work program.

To be successful in this role, you bring:

  • Experience in advising on, supporting and managing Board related processes and governance in the public and/or private sector
  • Experience in providing financing/funding legal support and advice
  • A proven track record in providing clear, simple, solution-focused advice
  • Ideally knowledge of the public sector, Crown Entities Act and Public Finance Act
  • Strategic and innovative thinking beyond the issue at hand, and curiosity
  • Experience in actively managing legal risk in a complex environment
  • Ideally 5-8 years of post-qualification experience
  • Tertiary law qualifications or in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • Current New Zealand Law Society Practising Certificate

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.'
