The details: Permanent Full time – 40 hours per week

Salary details: Permanent – 2 x Part time roles available for a 7 days a week service


Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

Exciting opportunities for qualified practitioners to join the Social Work services to undertake full or a mix of part-time permanent roles primarily in critical care at Waikato Hospital.

These positions will be providing patient care to the patients in Waikato Hospital. We will provide you with regular supervision, professional development and opportunities for growth. You will need to be flexible and think on your feet in this often fast paced and busy environment. Prior experience working in critical care would be advantageous.

This role is a part of a 7-day service and the successful candidate must be available to work at least one day of the weekend; this can be discussed further at an interview.

Mōu | About you

Skills and experience you’ll need to be considered for the role:

  • Qualified, and at least 2 years’ experience as social worker
  • Registered as a social worker with the NZ Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB)
  • Have a current annual practising certificate
  • Hold a current drivers licence

And you will need the following competencies:

  • psycho-social assessment and intervention
  • intimate partner violence screening, assessment and intervention
  • child protection and vulnerable adult assessment and intervention
  • individual and family counselling skills
  • therapeutic social work
  • a commitment to bicultural practice
  • Knowledge of the emotional and social impacts of changing health status.
  • experience in service development
  • ability to navigate access to a wide variety of resources and support services
  • Proven experience as part of an MDT for collaborative care
  • case management skills


Mō tātou Ratonga | About our Service

The Critical Care service at Waikato Hospital provides 24/7 emergency care and is the trauma centre for Te Manawa Taki region. It is a dynamic team environment within the wider Critical Care team requiring a broad skillset to manage varied and evolving presentations. Social Workers are key members of the multi-disciplinary team, working directly with clients/whānau during this difficult time. Social workers in this area may be called upon to cover service exigencies/needs of the larger critical care space including ICU/ HDU/ED as well as our acute medical and surgical units.

Our Social Work team provides cover to the Emergency Department, Critical Care, Medicine, Surgery, Women's Health, Paediatrics, Older Persons & Rehabilitation, Renal and Oncology. This gives our team a huge breadth of experience, expertise and ability to support each other.
